On Sri Krishna Janmashtami

Om Vishnupad 108 Tridandi Swami Sri Srimat Bhakti Sravan Tirtha Goswami Maharaj ki Jai

Hear the detailed katha here in Bangla.

Historically, Lord Krishna appeared on the midnight of the 8th day of the dark half of the month of Sravana (July/Aug), 5249 years ago. He exhibited His pastimes for a little over 125 years on the earthly plane and disappeared on the new moon night of Phalguna (Feb/March) in Prabhasa Kshetra near Dwarka, in modern coastal Gujarat. (His departure marks the beginning of the current age of Kali.)

Srila Vishvanath Chakravarti Thakur outlines Lord Krishna's activities in this way: the first three years and four months were spent in Gokula, then equal lengths of time in Vrindavan and Nandagram, eighteen years and four months in Mathura, and finally ninety-six years and eight months in Dvaraka totalling 125 years of manifest pastimes.

This is “external” story well known to all. However, once Baba revealed the “internal” story of Sri Krishna’s birth.

Baba said that Sri Krishna is the original Mool Bhagavan (Original God). All other expansions and expansions of the expansions rest in Sri Krishna. The Lord who appeared in Kamsa’s dungeon was actually the four-armed Bhagavan Vaasudeva - the first plenary expansion of Sri Krishna. (The other three expansions are Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Anirudha - each emerging from the prior expansion).

Meanwhile what is not very well known is that in Gokul, Yasoda rani gave birth to twin children. (Baba wiggled two fingers here). Sri Krishna and Sri Yogamaya – the original Vrajendranandan Krishna and His Primal Energy Adi Shakti Yogamaya. Nanda Baba and Yasoda are the eternal parents of Krishna in Golok Vrindavan. Thus even in Chandipath Devi Durga is mentioned as Anuja, the younger sister of Sri Krishna.

Continuing Baba said when Vasudev ji placed the Child born in Mathura next to Sri Krishna in Gokul, the expansion (Vaasudeva) merged into Baby Krishna. Thereafter, Vasudev carried the baby girl Yogamaya with him back to Mathura. This is what he was instructed to do by the Lord Himself. Thus Vrindavanchandra Krishna is the original source of all expansions and incarnations.

Again at the time of leaving Vrindavan for Mathura, Nanda Baba took Krishna and Balaram and quite a large contingent of Gopas to Mathura for the sporting event announced by Kamsa there. It was the Vaasudeva expansion of Krishna who went to Mathura at this time, accompanied by the Sankarshan expansion of Balaram. The original Krishna and Balaram remained in Vrindavan – but in an aprakat (unmanifest) form.

जन्म कर्म  मे दिव्यमेवं यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः

त्यक्त्वा देहं पुनर्जन्म नैति मामेति सोऽर्जुन

One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.

Who can fathom of the mysteries of Divinity incarnate? Therefore, Baba said, it is enough just to worship Sri Krishna and Radha, as they are the fountainhead – the source - of all Gods and Goddesses.
