2013 Guru Purnima

Om Vishnupad 108 Tridandi Swami Sri Srimat Bhakti Sravan Tirtha Goswami Maharaj ki Jai !!

Guru Purnima was observed at Sri Gouranga Ashram Bhubaneshwar with traditional elegance and solemnity on 22nd July 2013.

This year, a new temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was consecrated
on the same day amid much celebration.

The shiva-linga from the holy Narmada River is appropriately called Sri Narmadeshwar Mahadev.

The temple also houses charming deities of the Lord’s family – Devi Parvati, Kumar Kartikeya and Ganesh.

There is also a very attractive deity of Durga in black stone in the sanctum sanctorum.

As is the custom, religious observances started on the previous day Sunday 21 July with Adhivas ceremonies in preparation for the pran-pratishtha on the following day.

Also on the evening before Guru Purnima, orphan children from Adhruta Children’s Home were invited for a small function.  The girls ranging from age 4 to 16 sang beautiful bhajans and in the end, they were treated to refreshment and snacks.  Afterwards, they were all given uniforms as gifts.

Gouranga Ashram has been supporting this institution for several years by donating much needed items as well as by conducting health check-ups for the children on a regular basis. The home provides shelter and education to orphaned children, mostly abandoned girls.

On the following day – Guru Purnima – there were two functions. Lord Shiva’s pran-pratishtha and Guru puja– side by side. The programmes started at 8 a.m. in the morning and continued till 4 p.m. (for the Shiva temple).

In between as part of Guru Purnima celebrations, mosquito nets were handed out to around 50 children from the School for Deaf-Mute Children in Palaspalli, Bhubaneshwar and they were treated to sumptuous Prasad.

More than 600 people honoured maha-prasad on the day.
