On Vegetarianism

Excerpted from an article by Sunayani Sen Gupta, published in The Harmonist 2003

Once during a train journey to Navadweep with Baba, He made a very significant statement on vegetarianism.

He said although Vaishnavas are traditionally vegetarians, yet the fact remains that food habits are a matter of personal choice and it is extremely difficult to alter life-long habits.

Garuda, the Divine Eagle, a dearmost devotee of Lord Krishna and his favourite vaahan (vehicle), survived on fish. It was his favourite food.

Similarly, Sri Nrisingha Bhagawan, being half-man half lion, required meat as his bhog prasad. Because this is in their nature.

So He said, food should not be made into a fetish and personal inclinations regarding diet should be satisfied.
